Churning Facts Of Struthiomimus

Late Cretaceous ostrich-like dinosaurs called Struthiomimus have been discovered in North America as fossils. About 2.5 meters long, Struthiomimus was clearly built for quick movement on powerful, well-developed hind limbs. In particular, the three-toed feet resembled birds because they had extraordinarily long metatarsals that, like those of birds, did not touch the ground.

The cranium of Struthiomimus was small, toothless, and perched atop a thin, extremely flexible neck; the jaws were likely protected by a somewhat avian-like horny beak. The three-fingered hands at the ends of the long, thin forelimbs had sharp claws that were specialized for grabbing. The fact that all three fingers on the hand are almost the same length, as they are in all theropod members of the Ornithomimid subgroup, is diagnostic.

Description Struthiomimus

The dimensions and anatomical characteristics of Struthiomimus were different from those of closely related genera like Ornithomimus and Gallimimus.

They possessed long necks and short, slender heads, just like other ornithomimids. Their jaws lacked teeth, and their eyes were big. Ten necks, thirteen backs, six hips, and around thirty-five tail vertebrae made up their vertebral columns. Their relatively strong tails were probably needed for balance.

With immovable forearm bones and limited opposability between the first finger and the other two, they had long, thin arms and hands. Possible wing feather support adaptations for these species.

The only modest differences in anatomy between Struthiomimus and its near relatives. In contrast to Ornithomimus, which had straight beak edges, Struthiomimus featured a concave top beak edge. Compared to other ornithomimids, Struthiomimus possessed longer hands and especially long claws. Compared to the comparable Ornithomimus, their forelimbs were sturdier.

A more recent species that seemed to be distinct from S. Several fossils discovered in the Horseshoe Canyon Formation and lower Lance Formation between 69 and 67.5 million years ago reveal that Altus had longer, more slender hands.
