Megalodon Shark: Things You Need To Know About This Ocean Dwelling Predator
If you have an interest in the ocean’s life, you probably know that Megalodon sharks are known to be the largest sharks ever dwelled in the sea. Though these predators are now extinct, people are keen to learn more about them. Since these sharks went extinct about 3.6 million years ago, the only way to know about them is by examining their fossilized teeth. But finding a megalodon tooth is not like strolling at the beach. Fossil collectors have to explore the marine deposits and rock formations of the Miocene and Pliocene age. So far, we know little about these predators with sharp, pointed teeth.
Megalodon sharks were about 60 feet long
Studies show Megalodon sharks grew up to 60 ft long on average. But some research estimates that they may have grown more than 80 ft, which is more than three times the size of great white sharks. Female Magalodons might have more body mass and longer length than male sharks.
Megalodon sharks preyed on other sea creatures
Paleontologists believe Megalodons preyed on sharks, dolphins, sea lions, fish, and turtles. There is little evidence to show that whales were also Megalodon’s prey when they were the rulers of the ocean. Many rock surfaces also have engraved teeth marks of these predators.
Megalodon sharks have up to 300 teeth
Megalodons had strong jaws that could open up to 3.5 meters, huge enough to hallow small sea creatures. It is estimated that their nine to eleven ft wide jaw possessed up to 300 sharp, pointy teeth.
Megalodon sharks could replace their teeth
While humans lose their teeth only once, Megalodons could replace their missing teeth throughout their lives. Though sharks, including Megalodon sharks, lose their teeth every two weeks, finding a Megalodon tooth, especially a six-inch-long tooth, is still challenging.
Megalodon shark teeth are expensive
A six or more inch long Megalodon tooth can be priced at hundreds and thousands of dollars depending on its condition as it is extremely rare and valuable. You can buy a Megalodon tooth from a trusted and renowned dealer if you are a tooth collector.
