Interesting Facts About Crocodiles That Will Blow Your Mind

You might have seen a crocodile in your local zoo or in a life-sized aquarium but what if we told you that there was a time during the Cretaceous period when crocodiles reigned the earth and roamed around freely along with their close relatives, dinosaurs. Crocodiles are huge reptiles that live in freshwaters, lakes, and rivers

Here are a few facts about crocodiles that you need to know.

1)     The most fascinating fact about crocodiles is that they do not chew their foods. Crocodiles have 24 sharp teeth but they rarely use them to chew food. Rather they tear apart the flesh and swallow large chunks of the meat. They even swallow stones to make the process of grinding faster in their stomach and this is known as “gastroliths.”

2)      You must have heard the phrase “crying crocodile tears” which means showing deceptive emotions. This phrase comes from the fact that since it appears that crocodiles are weeping while eating their prey, but in reality, it is the air being pushed out of their sinuses that gives an impression of tears.

3)     The infant mortality rate is very high in these reptiles. Most crocodiles do not live past their first year. This is primarily because they are eaten by predators like birds, hyenas, and other crocodiles.

4)     This might sound bizarre but a baby crocodile can make sounds from inside its eggs. This serves as an indication to its mother that it is ready to hatch. Since crocodile eggs are buried in the sand, upon hearing its babies’ voices, the mother removes the eggs from the sand and protects them until they hatch.

5)     The crocodile’s jaw is the most powerful one of any animal in the animal kingdom. If you thought a lion’s bite is the most powerful, a crocodile can bite nearly three times the force of a lion.
